We spend 5 minutes with TV presenter and self-confessed 'crap housewife', Jessica Rowe hearing how she makes life easy in the kitchen.
What are some great time saving tips in the kitchen for home cooks?
As a Crap Housewife some days I’m better organised than others. Keep it simple and take the pressure off yourself. It’s okay to have toast or cereal for dinner every now and then!
As sometimes the wheels do fall off. Look for short cuts and celebrate what you’re good at.
As a mum, what's your advice for parents trying to feed mouths of different ages (including fussy eaters) at home?
My mum used to make us a ‘tasting plate’ of cut up veggies, some cheese and fruit while she was making dinner. We used to think it was very fancy! I do the same with my kids. It’s a great way of getting some veggies into them. Sometimes they’ll eat it, other times they won’t. But most of all, try not to stress about it.
How do you get your kids excited about eating at home?
For our family, we keep things simple. We love anything crumbed in our household so that’s why the schnitzel is a real hit. I also like to make hats to match the meals I’ve cooked!
I know it sounds crazy but it makes all of us laugh. My next project is a sausage in a frypan hat!
Bing Lee's survey uncovered that more than a third (35%) of Australian adults say Meat & Veg is their favourite meal. Why do you think this remains our go to dinner of choice?
It’s no surprise that the Bing Lee report reveals that one third of Australians prefer meat and veg. How can you really go wrong with meat and veg?! It’s easy, it’s healthy and there are so many alternatives to suit everyone’s taste.
What are the top 3 appliances any home cook should have in their kitchen?
The Air Fryer! Wow! So many people rave about them and now I understand why. You can’t really go wrong with it, my favourite dish at the moment is the chicken schnitzel for the family, it’s crunchy yet not oily which is great. I’ve got the Philips Airfryer XXL Premium
The next on my list is the pie maker. We’re big fans of the party pie and now I can make my own! I’ve only recently got the pie maker and it’s quick and super easy to use. Now I’m using left over mince for meat pies, BBQ chook for chicken pies and everyone loves them. Next on the list are apple pies for dessert. Yum.
I also have a Tefal Mediterranean Wokpan. This is a great pan that you can use to cook so many different things! It’s perfect for cooking a stir fry, chicken and veggies and my all- time go to meal of mince many different ways
