Personal style is something I've always struggled with. I'm often afraid to experiment with different looks, not wanting to veer away from what I know already works for me. My wardrobe, makeup routine and hair has been pretty much the same for as long as I can remember!
Over the years, I've come in contact with a different stylists, who have all given me pointers of how I can try and mix things up a bit.
Keep reading below for some ways you can mix up your look....
Find Your Style
I've got a somewhat difficult body shape to dress. I'm petite (5"2), but extremely curvy. Which means clothing that fits over my curves is often too big in length. I know what suits my body and have a clear idea of what I like. You really need to know what suits you, which is the power of having your own style! So take the time to cultivate. A good starting point is figuring out which general sense of style makes you feel at your most confident self. There’s no point contorting your personality into a type of clothing that doesn’t work for you.
Invest in quality over quantity
They say the difference between good and great is around 25%. If you could just increase whatever it is you’re doing by 25%, then you’ll notice the difference. This idea can be applied to clothing. You might have a set amount of money that you generally like to spend on tops, jeans, shoes, jackets, and so on. But is there a way you could spend a little bit extra? You’ll find that the quality is greatly improved, and that it shows. There’s a reason why fast-fashion pieces are so cheap. Plus, the better quality clothing will last longer too, so you don’t need to continually go searching for new pieces that you love- the ones you own will be with you for years.
Off-Beat Pieces
If you want to have a unique look, why not look at having a few really unique pieces of clothing? A good place to find them is charity stores, vintage shops, and clothing markets -- the latter will be populated by people who have handmade their own clothing. There might be a few versions of the same, but they’ll all have been made with love in their own special way, which will make them unique!
Your Hairstyle
It’s not just your clothes that will make you stand out from the crowd. Let’s not forget that most people are going to be drawn to your face -- it’s at eye level -- before they see what you’re wearing. So look at figuring out your own signature hairstyle. Take a look at some inspiration, and then put your own spin on it. You’ll want to find a good hairstylist to help you -- there’s nothing sadder than putting your vision for your hair in the wrong hands, and coming out with something that’s just not what you were hoping for. Makeup Routines
You have a drawer full of makeup supplies, but are you using them in the right way? Everyone’s face is different, so it’s worthwhile taking the time to figure out what kind of routine works best for you. There are some people who have a face that just pops the second you see; they look so well put together. All the skills that the professional makeup artist has can be learned by you!
Add Accessories
I'm one of those people that have a million handbags, scarves, belts and other accessories, but don't make use of them. But they really can take an outfit to another level. There are so many ways you can take it: you can buy a necklace, ring, bracelet, earrings, and more. Look at building up a collection, and don’t be afraid to be bold, especially when you’re trying to make an impression. If you don’t have all that many pieces at the moment, take a look at the full range of jewellery here.
Own It
Finally, remember the golden rule for having your own sense of style: own it! You can’t get very far if you don’t have confidence. Confidence comes from within, so build it up there first, and throw yourself into however it is that you want to look. It’ll be the final piece of the puzzle.
